Equality and Diversity
Update
The Central Beds Access Group, previously known as the Mid Bedfordshire Access Group, has a zero tolerance approach to discrimination of any kind. We will continue to work to ensure that all residents of Mid Beds are able to utilise the full range of resources and opportunities available to them. This will only be achieved when those who provide an environment that is conducive to the personal enjoyment of each individual remove the barriers that can prevent members of society from achieving their full potential.
Equality and Diversity - these three words are now part of everyday life. For most, it means putting into practice that which benefits those in the community and workplace; for others it means putting “ticks” in boxes and very little else.
We all take our health for granted, yet apart from those who are born with debilitating medical conditions none of us are indestructible. Many of us will at some time in our lives become disabled - some for a limited period, others for the rest of our lives. The lifestyle of young people, fast cars, drink and drugs and the pressures of modern life have a habit of turning sour and those who have enjoyed an active lifestyle suddenly find, often without warning that they are reliant on others to care for part or all of their everyday needs.
Some will say advancement in medical technology ensures that people who a decade ago would not have survived a serious injury or illness are now doing exactly that. For the most part they are able, maybe some in a limited capacity, to contribute to that which matters to them either personally, passionately or generally.
The problems arise when those who should do something positive ignore their responsibilities under the DDA Law. Instead, they expect those who are protected by such laws to ‘fend for themselves and get on with it’. Most do, but when disabled people have no alternative but to fight for their rights, a portion of society are quick to condemn their actions.
I do not use the words “him or her” as disabled people are not a singular entity. They have families and friends and by denying access to the disabled person, access is also denied to those who care and look after loved ones. I do not mention age, since disability, unlike certain service providers, does not discriminate. It affects all ages at anytime and anywhere. Some time ago councillors and officers, during a discussion regarding an important disability issue, appeared to be sighing and raising their eyebrows. They were reminded that any one of them could become a disabled person by the time the speaker had finished his address in three minutes time. This comment then ensured that the speaker had the full attention of those present. The speaker who was against the issue won the day, the motion was defeated and the residents of Mid Beds benefit to this day.
